The Apple retail stores have stopped using Symbol devices and are now using iPod Touches with a custom card swipe enclosure. A new firm from Twitter's co-founder called SquareUp (http://squareup.com/) has a little device that plugs into the audio jack of various mobile devices that allows card swiping. It is my understanding that they will be giving away this little dongle for free when you sign up for a SquareUp account. Does AppNinjas have anything in the works to offer this type of functionality?

We sure do! We'll have some more to tell you soon.

Soon please! There is at least one big company now offering a card reader for iPhone but you have to switch to their app, merchant account and gateway. I'd really love to see one coming from AppNinjas!

Bear with us - it's our very highest priority and I promise we'll have something completely and totally awesome befitting of the "Swipe" name. Very soon.

PLease notify as soon as this is implemented - impossible for serious merchants to utilize this software without some kind of hardware integration.

yes, I'll add my vote, have a busy street fair coming up mid July and another mid August, would really love to be able to truly hard swipe the cards as they hand them to us, and just key in the dollar amount and any missing info not captured from the magnetic strip on the card

Is there any update you can provide on this.

We where actually purchased and it delayed some of our projects a bit. However we are back on track and looking at aprox a month release time for the swiper. We're just waiting for various final approvals and the like.

Guys, I see you were bought out. I'm looking forward to the swipe device. I don't want to hijack the thread, but 1 quick question...will your sale mean you're no longer a "universal gateway" app and force users to use one of the new owners payment gateways?

Yes, please let us know what the intention is with this - whether you'll be landlocked ot a certain transaction processor or not - which means we can just go with any company that provides this functionality, as opposed to using your app with the company of our choice. That would be a bummer.
Judy

No actually once we get our footing again the intention is to begin adding gateways again like we where before. We even have a few being looked into as we speak. So have no fear, we'll still be the same old app you know and love, even better!

Do you guys have any pictures of what the card swipe will look like? Or any test videos?

Not as of yet unfortunately. My understanding is that it's a case style device that the phone slips inside of like those extended battery cases. As soon as WE get our first batch from production (which should be soon) we'll likely start putting up teasers and the like.

Not to be a pain (oh alright.. I will be one), but where do we stand on this issue? I'd also be interested in being able to print a recipt on the spot via blu tooth.
Thanks!

I've got a few emails out requesting information on this. As soon as I have an updated ETA or other suitable information I'll make another post here.

Looks like the iMag read is already shipping: http://www.cardreaderstore.com/#ecwid:category=106196&mode=prod...
Will this work with Swipe? What about the Bluetooth reader offered by the same folks?
If not, any news on your own supported hardware?

Well, hate to say it guys, but waiting since January didn't help.
Downloaded the iPayPOS app yesterday (http://www.ipaypos.com) that goes with the iMag card reader (http://www.cardreaderstore.com/#ecwid:category=106196&mode=prod...) mentioned by Paul in his July 27 posting above, and ordered the $75 iMag and got it today. Works flawlessly right out of the box, even picks up customer last name and expiration date along with the card number! [PS, tried ithe iMag with Swipe, and Swipe does not recognize the reader or the card swipe... wah wah wah wah wah (sad face)]
iPay interface isn't as elegant as Swipe and the emailed customer reciepts aren't as polished, plus the $29.99 iTunes app pricetag for the unlimited transaction version of iPay is higher than Swipe, but we lost customers in line last month at an outdoor festival while they waited for us to manually key-in all the card info into Swipe... so iPay + iMag now wins for the next festival. And honestly I was willing to pay $100 for a reader to speed up the process and solve the problem, so $30 app + $75 devive wasn't bad!
BTW, iPay and iMag websites have been timing out today, maybe lots of folks switching over to them jamming their servers? they just rebooted. But tech support and customer service from within the iPay app and via email have been instantaneous. The admin dude was personally emailing me instructions and bug fixes after midnite my local time! and all day during the day too, when does he sleep? I don't know. But if you NEED a card reader for your 3GS or 4, then iPay + iMag will have you up and running as soon as you have it on your phone. If you order it, tell Randy at iPay that Andy from AlwaysHappyHour.com sent ya! I get nothing from it, but dude seems to be a real nice guy and appreciates the honest feedback from us users and customers and I'm happy I solved my reader problem. (thanks Paul for posting!)

Andy - what payments processor are you using - does Ipay work with paypal?
Judy

Their payment processors are here: http://www.ipaypos.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=articl...
Looks like paypal pro is on the list

I'm going to give it about three more weeks before I bail and go with iPayPOS. That's how long I have before I need to prepare for my next on-site event., and like Andy, I can't afford to lose customers because I'm taking too long to key in credit cards.
I really like Swipe, but if just isn't working for me, I gotta bail.
BTW, the mophie marketplace reader seems to be in limbo, too. I wonder if that's what Swipe is planning to use?

Hey Paul, do give yourself enough time to get the Card Reader sent to you so you can set up the App and test it a few times quitely before being in front of a crowd of customers with cards waving in hand, the company ships from CA, I had it overnighted becuase I was up against a wall with an event just 5 days away and couldn't risk missing the Reader, but you and others might be OK with waiting 3-4 days for Priority Mail regular service, the whole thing weighs less than half a pound to ship
plus I messed up wth typos on my gateway API and Login, and iPayPOS had to customize a personal workaround to the iPhone IOS4 bug that hasn't offically been approved by Apple or the iTunes App Store. I could have waited about 2 or 3 more days for Apple to bless iPay's next update officially, but again, didn't want to risk not being able to use the card reader live at the outdoor fest.
The iPay POS basic app is actually free to download and test for 10 test transactions, then you can upgrade to 10 charges for 99 cents a set or the unltd version as you see fit. I prob won't have 300 transactions this weekend to payback the unltd version, but I didn't want to have to stop after every 10 charges and log into iTunes again to make another 99 cent purchase. YMMV.
Either way, the iMag reader will work with the free version or the 99 cent version or the $29.99 version of iPay once you get that Reader..
Just noticed it even has a mini-usb plug on the side of it so I can juice up the iPhone when not making sales without having to un-snap it from the iMag. SWEET!
- Andy

One of the best rated merchant apps for iPhone, but you can't get seem to come up with hardware! Sorry Andy, but iMag sux! I ordered it on your great reveiw and the dang thing wont even stay on the phone!
Come on guys! Crap or get off the pot with this!

I'd like to know if we can have an update. its been over 1 month since we have heard anything from support. If you can't get the hardware i'll be changing to iPay and getting the iMag reader.

Hello,
Our apologies for the delay in replying here. Our release of this hardware was not just delayed but was pushed back a bit by the sale of AppNinjas a few months ago. We ARE still working to get our device out as soon as possible but while the hardware is mostly ready, many of the other processes had to be all but restarted.... approvals and licensing and the like. This is a high priority for us and we do hate keeping you waiting. I'm awaiting a more detailed update with expected timeframes but I wanted to at least get this out in the meantime so it didn't look like we where ignoring anyone. It's been 400 miles an hour and we appreciate your patience with this.
Best Regards,
AppNinjas Support

The Mophie Marketplace is shipping!
